Here are some images from South Dakota Honor Flight 11. They begin with the actual music performed by the El Riad Shrine Chanters who graciously sang for the veterans' send off. It was such a moving experience to again be with so many amazing heroes who gave so much for our Country. Listening to their incredible stories and sharing in this deeply meaningful and touching journey was such an honor. Freedom isn't free and we are so grateful to all of our veterans. God Bless America and all of our troops. We appreciate and thank you for your service. You are true heroes!

Meet Chayce~Little Grape

"Since being born premature in 2006, little Chayce has been a trooper. Originally from California, Chayce and his family were no strangers to their local hospital. Having been placed on a feeding tube by the age of 16-months to correct acid reflux, he continued to experience eating and feeding problems. Eventually, the family moved to South Dakota where a routine check-up at Avera Children’s led to a whirlwind of tests and procedures. Chayce initially complained of stomach pain but went on to have seizures; requiring emergency medical services. Thankfully, they were in the right place at the right time. Today, despite multiple tests and procedures, Chayce continues to experience issues with his stomach and esophagus but is making progress thanks to the care at Avera Children’s."

"Full of spirit and energy, 10-year-old Mikayla was spending a typical summer afternoon playing in a city park when her life was thrown a curve ball. While climbing a large tree, she lost her balance and fell to the ground. After the resounding “thud” came the realization of her injuries. Her head was split open and her body was bruised. After a visit to the local emergency room, it was determined that she had broken her back and was immediately transferred to Avera Children’s Hospital for surgery. Two days later, Mikayla was on the mend – only memories and a large brace reminded her of that fateful afternoon. Thanks to the care of Avera Children’s and the child life specialists, she is on her way to making a full recovery."

"Mariah is a young girl full of smiles and laughter. Mariah came to Avera Children’s Pediatric ICU after falling, causing a spleen injury. Mariah was hospitalized for a couple weeks on bed rest. During her recovery she was full of energy and kept the child life specialists busy with all her craft projects and games, she was eager to play. Her favorite activity was syringe painting. Mariah would stay up late into the evening watching movies and having sleepovers with her friend in her hospital room.

Soon after Mariah was discharged, she was right back visiting Avera Children’s for a few days before discharging for the second time. A few months had gone by and one day Mariah was admitted again as she wasn’t feeling well. After several tests, pokes, and x-rays they found out her appendix was causing her discomfort. So off to surgery she went and was very brave. Three hospitalizations in a short amount of time, Mariah has overcome challenges and never lost her smile and laughter. Mariah was a lot of fun and Avera Children’s staff was honored in taking care of her during her hospitalizations."

"For thirteen years, Bryce was known for his fun-loving actions and practical jokes. But what happened one afternoon was anything but funny. An accident that involved his brother’s vehicle resulted in a traumatic brain injury and landed young Bryce in critical condition at Avera McKennan. His future was unclear, but thanks to the caregivers at Avera Children’s and the support of his family and friends, Bryce slowly began to make progress—despite the odds. Today, Bryce has returned home and is resuming his normal daily activities. He continues to work on rehabilitation but is getting stronger every day."

I'd love you to meet a few of the amazing "Little Grapes" that I've been blessed to photograph for Avera Children's. They are each so special and they truly touch my heart. I get so much more back than what I give when hearing what these inspiring children and their families have gone through.

"Weighing in at a mere 1 lb, 4 oz, Mason spent the first three months of his life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Avera Children’s struggling with infections. His mother, Jessica, suffered from a syndrome where a deadly antibody threatened the life of her unborn child. She immediately underwent treatments and she and her husband were thrilled to welcome their little miracle into the world. Despite spending time in the NICU , little Mason continues to grow stronger and everyone is optimistic he will lead a healthy life free of complications resulting from his premature arrival."

My perfect day would be in the summer laying out on the beach with all my friends. It would be really relaxing and chill and we would talk about everything going on in life. My experience at Evans was AMAZING! The day I got the call to be an Evans model, I was so excited!!! Walking into the studio was breathtaking. Rod has such a cool style and awesome ideas! He really focused on every little detail before he snapped a shot to make sure everything was perfect. I really liked that! I loved all my pictures and get so many compliments from them. Beauty and the Beast

I believe real beauty comes from within. People with real beauty treat everyone with respect and kindness. They don't cast unfair judgement upon anyone. They keep God close to heart and live by His guidance and wisdom. They stand up for what they believe in and aren't discouraged by what society thinks they should be. They are true to themselves, and they shape their lives without the bad influences of the world around them.

My experience at Evans was so awesome that words can't even express it. I'll be honest though, before I got to the studio I was a little nervous and didn't know what to expect. Right when I walked in the door everyone was so friendly and welcoming. When I met Rod he was friendly, bubbly, and so much fun. While taking pictures Rod was great at directing me with how to pose and giving me encouragement throughout the photo shoot. He designed my photo shoot custom to me, from the settings and poses to the makeup and lighting! I was impressed that he was able to understand my style and personality so well just from the little he knew about me. He knew what to do to give me photographs I would love!
Throughout the photo shoot, I could tell Rod had an incredible gift of photography. As an artistic person myself, I could see how he knew how to get all the right lighting and angles to get the best photographs out of me. I have been an admirer of him since I first saw his work. I can honestly say I have never seen photos like his anywhere. He truly has a gift unlike any other! -Jessica

There is a true artistic charisma about you that changes and inspires people more than I think you will ever know. To me real beauty is all around. From the breathtaking flowers in a grassy field, to birds chirping at the yawning of the morning sun, to even the perfect architectural buildings in the community. Coinciding with real beauty being all around us, is the sometimes not so obvious. For example life's moments of learning how to ride a bike, going on a first date, or helping your grandparents are not as obvious, but going in depth they portray real beauty. Real beauty to me comes from the bravery within one's self; it is exhibited on the outside all through life, from a smile, a laugh, to an unexpected discovery. Beauty can be hidden or plainly seen but to me it is all around us in the everyday moments of our lives.

Ever since I arrived at high school I dreamed of having my senior pictures taken by Rod Evans. Being highly active in the fine arts, I could plainly see his artistic abilities, custom lighting, and perfect "eye" for photography in every picture he took. I had to have my pictures taken by such an inspirational person. Luckily sophomore year I heard from my senior friends about the amazing opportunity of being an Evans model. This made me want to turn my dream into a reality. As soon as I was old enough to fill out the model application for 2012, I did...When the exciting day of my model session came it was all I could have hoped for. The photo shoot was so much fun! The hospitality was amazing; I was treated like a star. Rod's photos were spectacular. His artistic abilities shined through portraying the real me in every shot. I never wanted my model session to end, but sadly it did. Now I want summer to hurry up so I can have my senior session. If I was ever asked to have my photos taken by Rod Evans I would do it in a heartbeat. The experience was amazing; I cannot stop telling my friends and family about it. -Jaylynn

I think real beauty is what comes from the inside. You capture the true beauty inside someones heart and soul. I don't think that beauty is from being hot or sexy and wearing loads of makeup or sexy clothing, but to have dignity and love from the inside. It doesn't have to be so much about appearance but what is really there. That is what I think true beauty is. Thank you again Rod! I just returned from a phenomenal week with some of the World's leading photographers in stunning Cabo San Lucas. The Society of XXV is a group of 25 of the finest photographers from all over the world who gather to share cutting edge ideas to raise the level of our craft. The talent and kindness of this group is off the charts. It truly was a mind-blowing explosion of creativity elevating each of us .Thank you Kent and Sarah for being such gracious hosts. The beauty of the area was breathtaking with the tranquil golden beach along the crystal blue waters of the Sea of Cortez. The jumping whales were incredible. What an epic week of creativity, extraordinary insights and powerful inspiration!

Being as obsessed with fashion, photography and the arts as I am, I had the most amazing experience modeling for Evans...As the days to my shoot grew nearer, the excitement grew. Finally it was the day of my session. We hit the streets to find the perfect destination to capture the beautiful sunset and to get just the right picture Rod had in mind. The clouds and sky were breathtaking. Rod truly made me feel like I was the center of the world. Evans doesn't just take pictures for quantity, they really go for quality. He made sure everything was perfect not just as a photographer, but an artist. Rod focused on the lighting, colors, position shadowing, EVERYTHING. Evans, was the best decision for senior pictures that I could have made. Not only did my model pictures turn out amazing, I had loads of fun taking them! I'm sad my model session is over, but now I'm looking forward and counting down the days to this summer when I have my senior session booked! I had loads of fun Rod! I know everyone says it, but it truly was an amazing experience. Thank you sososo much!

My perfect day would begin with waking up to golden rays of sunlight streaming through the blinds and birds singing happily outside. I would look at the clock, and realize that I had slept in far too late and would be just fine with that. As I walk out to the kitchen, I realize nobody is home. I open the pantry to get a box of cereal and notice a plate of fresh steaming pancakes, scrambled eggs, and sausage. After breakfast I load up a picnic basket, some towels, my camera, and drive to a lake. Arriving at the lake I notice all of my friends are already there and need just one more player for their beach volleyball game. My team would take the victory and it would be time for lunch. After an afternoon of sunbathing and swimming exhaustion would set in. Once I got home I would jump in the shower and then take a much needed nap. Waking up once again, it would be mid-evening and time to get ready for a night out with some close friends. We would walk the streets of downtown and eventually attend a friend's dance party. Walking into the room of flashing lights and music, the excitement would set in and stay the rest of the night. Toward midnight fatigue from the day of packed events would finally creep its way through my body. My perfect day would end with me climbing under the covers of my bed to sleep until noon the next day.

My perfect day would be laying out in the sun and on the beach. I loved the Evans experience. I went in not knowing what I was doing, but when I got in there I felt so natural in front of the camera. It was just so different and enjoyable. I went home and bragged to all my friends and family about how good my experience was! Loved it!

INSPIRING CHILDREN

Young Ian fights cancer like a Jedi warrior! A typical 6-year old boy, Ian was awakened early on Thursday morning by a horrible headache. Within an hour, he became unresponsive and was rushed to the Avera McKennan Emergency Department. A mere hour later, Ian was in the midst of a seven-hour surgery to remove a tumor from the back of his head. Diagnosed with a childhood medulloblastoma, he spent his time recovering at Avera Children's Hospital & Clinics. After being treated with a combination of radiation and chemotherapy, Ian was on his way to recovery. Today he is a lively 8-year old boy who loves Star Wars and has very grateful parents. Ian still receives laboratory and follow-up care with Avera and through it all, Ian's mom and dad have remained faithful on this journey and credit the physicians and staff of Avera Children's.

I am so touched and inspired by the young heroes like Ian and Grace that I photograph. I'm grateful to be able to give back to our wonderful community by doing what I love and helping families turn tough times into images that reflect the strength and essence of their amazing children. Speaking at Imaging USA 2010

I had a blast speaking at Imaging USA again this year. It's one of the largest conventions/trade shows for professional photographers, with over 10,000 photographers attending. This year it was held in Nashville TN. It was great to speak to such a fantastic group of photographers and business people. What an incredible turnout! Do you think we could've squeezed a few more people into the room?--lol!

I was thrilled to be asked back to speak again at this years Senior Portrait Artists Event in San Diego California. This year's theme was "the Voyage". The Event was designed to "help you keep your studio on the cutting edge of the new frontier, creating blue oceans and navigating economic, social and technological changes." It was a phenomenal week of inspiration, learning, and sharing with some great photographers and business people. To top it all off, the Event was held on the oceanfront in warm, sunny California at the amazing Hotel del Coronado, considered by many as one of the most beautiful resort destinations in the world. What a great way to start the new year. I'm so excited about all of the awesome things we have planned for our studio and our fantastic clients this year.
